Note taking application with markdown editor and encryption support for mobile and desktop platforms. Runs client-side and syncs through a self hosted Nextcloud instance or similar (alternative to Evernote).

Switching from Evernote

Your data: Evernote exports notebooks as ENEX files. Joplin imports complete notebooks, notes, tags, attachments and metadata from them.

  1. Export your Evernote notebooks to ENEX files.
  2. In the Joplin desktop app, open File → Import → ENEX and select a file, or a folder of ENEX files.
  3. Notes go into a new notebook named after the file; with a folder, Joplin creates one notebook per file.
  4. In Joplin's terminal app, use import /path/to/file.enex instead.

Watch out for:

  • Evernote's text-recognition data isn't kept (Joplin recreates it if OCR is turned on).
  • Evernote's HTML is converted to Markdown: simple formatting and tables come across, but very complex notes may lose some formatting.
